Lady Pirates are 2023-24 Conference Champs

By: Tammy Stephen

Coach Patrick Drennan and the Calico Rock Jr Lady Pirates will be raising their very own banner this year as they are the 2023-24 Conference Champs.  With an overall record of 18-6 and 6-1 in conference, the Jr Lady Pirates were presented with the Championship trophy at the finals of the District tournament.   Coach Drennan stated, “This group of girls all love each other and are an incredibly tight knit group of kids who love to get better together and more importantly are selfless enough to celebrate each other and do the little things on the court that it takes to win.”

This is the first time in 15 years that a Jr Lady Pirates team has won this title.  The last season the plaque was brought home to Harold Ray Jeffery Gymnasium was the 2008-09 season coached by Scott Faulkner. The Lady Pirates went on to win the 1A State Championship in 2011 under new head coach Josh Wright. If the trend follows suit, we have great things in our Lady Pirate future.

Coach goes on to say, “They have worked incredibly hard all season and are starting to see that hard work pays off.  This isn’t just a great group of basketball players, it’s a great team and we are more proud of that than anything. We strive everyday to put a product on the floor that our community can be proud of and get behind.”

The Jr Lady Pirates were the number one seed in the Jr District Tournament this year and won their first game by a landslide, 47-16 over the number five seeded Shirley Jr Lady Blue Devils. This victory put them into the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the Concord Jr Lady Pirates pulled off the upset ending the Jr Lady Pirates season.  No stats available.
