Truck Crashes into Local Food Pantry Building

During its monthly food distribution on Saturday, volunteers at the Calico Rock Food Pantry were shaken by a loud boom that shook the building as a pickup truck slammed through the wall of the building.

Although several people were in the building at the time of the crash neither the pickup truck driver nor anyone inside was injured.

However, massive damage to the building resulted from the truck plowing through the outside wall. Impact occurred on the wall housing both a new walk -in freezer and the building’s walk-in cooler. Both the freezer and cooler units were pushed into the room and completely destroyed. Other structural damage also resulted from the crash.

Pantry Co-Director Tom Smotherman said it was a miracle no one was hurt in the accident. After a few minutes to make sure everyone was okay, distribution activities were able to continue, and everyone was able to receive their food assistance.

Food insecurity and the need for food assistance in the Calico Rock area has grown significantly during the last few months with the pantry serving nearly 120 households each month. The loss of the walk-in freezer and cooler is a huge setback in the pantry’s ability to provide additional food needs for the community.

Anyone wishing to help in the food pantry’s recovery can make donations to the Calico Rock Food Pantry, P.O. Box 742, Calico Rock, AR 72519.
