North Central Unit Officially Renamed

More than 100 people attended Fridays offical renaming ceremony of the North Central Unit. The unit, now officially named the Benny Magness Unit was renamed in the ceremony attended by Mr. Magness, his family, prison wardens, state representatives, state officials, local judges and sheriffs, and past and present Board of Correction members. A lunch was provided along with nearly an hour of speeches highlighting the legacy Magness leaves on the state following his retirement in late December 2025.
Presentations included a framed aerial photo of the prison and a large shield bearing the Department of Correction insignia. “A lasting reminder of your dedication to the people of Arkansas,” said Dr. Dubs Byers, retired Superintendent of Correctional Schools. A ribbon cutting was held in front of the new entrance sign and was held outdoors on the prison grounds.
Benny Magness said that it wasn’t until he talked to Warden Hurst that it struck him that the prison was really going to bear his name. Magness also spoke about adjusting to life after retirement and the transition to having a facility bear his name. He is still going to be around in the businesses he is involved in but he is glad to have a lot taken off of his plate saying, “After 27 years, it’s time.”
Former State Representative Jack Fortner said, “I am a better man for the years I have known you.” State Representative Jason Nazarenko added, “I would not be who I am today without Benny.” ADC Secretary Lindsay Wallace said, “A strong correction system depends on the strength of those within it,” going on to credit Magness with much of that strength.
