Reminiscing at the Rock Shares Memories, Laughter, and Local History

There was plenty of history and more than a few smiles at the latest Reminiscing at the Rock gathering at the Calico Rock Museum and Visitor Center.
This month’s speakers, Katherine Owens and Rex Whitfield, welcomed guests into the story of Pineville, sharing memories that painted a vivid picture of life in earlier days. Together, the brother and sister reflected on the beginnings of the Pineville cemetery, memories of their preacher grandfather, the games children used to play, and the merger of the Pineville and Calico Rock school districts.
At 92 years old, Katherine Owens still had the crowd smiling with her sharp memory and lively spirit. You might say she still has all her marbles, which made the moment even sweeter since she shared that marbles were one of the games she loved playing as a child.
That is exactly what makes Reminiscing at the Rock special. It is not just a history program. It is a place where stories come alive, where neighbors remember together, and where pieces of local history that might otherwise fade away are passed on to a new generation.
The event is held every fourth Tuesday of the month at 1:00 p.m. in the Calico Rock Museum atrium, and the public is invited to attend, ask questions, and be part of the conversation. Those who cannot attend in person can also watch the live feed on Facebook.
Next month’s featured speaker will be Charlene Moser, who will be sharing about Crossroads in Dolph.
Anyone with a love for local people, places, and stories is encouraged to come take part. After all, the history of this area is not just found in books – it still lives in the memories of the people who were there to see it.
