Izard County Emergency Management Receives Narcan

In a significant step to combat the ongoing opioid epidemic, the Izard County Office of Emergency Management has received 44 units of Narcan from the state of Arkansas. This lifesaving medication, which can rapidly reverse the effects of opioid overdoses, will be distributed to fire departments throughout the county.

The state’s initiative to supply Narcan aligns with broader efforts to equip emergency personnel with the critical tools needed to address opioid-related emergencies effectively. With opioid overdoses continuing to be a public health concern, the availability of NARCAN enhances first responders’ ability to provide immediate assistance and potentially save lives.

“We are grateful to receive these 44 units of Narcan and no doubt thankful for the Arkansas Opioid Recovery Project (ARORP), the Arkansas Association of Counties and the Arkansas Municipal League that made this Narcan distribution possible and will allow our firefighters to act quickly when faced with an opioid-related emergency,” Stated Gary Dickerson-OEM Director.

Narcan, also known as naloxone, is a nasal spray that works by rapidly binding to opioid receptors in the brain, reversing respiratory depression caused by opioid overdoses. It is easy to administer and has been proven to save lives when used promptly.

According to state officials, the distribution of Narcan is part of Arkansas’ broader strategy to combat the opioid crisis, which includes public awareness campaigns, addiction treatment programs, and increased access to emergency interventions.
